Shopping in Auckland

Designer Shopping

Most of the designer shops are located in the Newmarket area where you’ll find internationally acclaimed local designers such as Karen Walker who features in the wardrobe of almost every female Hollywood star you can think of. Along with kiwi designers you’ll find all the international labels as well. Newmarket has the highest concentration of shoe shops in New Zealand with 24 of them crammed into the area. In between the chic boutiques and designer stores are a plethora of trendy cafes and upmarket restaurants and bars, so you’ll have no trouble recharging your batteries between bouts of shopping.

For an authentic Kiwi shopping experience visit the Otara Markets which celebrate the many varied cultures that make up the New Zealand cultural landscape. Here you can choose from arts, crafts, clothing, jewellery, fashion and authentic native food and fresh produce.

The Silo Markets are a favourite amongst locals and kick off on a Friday evening with pop up clothing stalls, food stalls and entertainment by local and international DJ’s. On Saturday the fun continues with vintage clothing, contemporary art and an eclectic mix of food stalls. Bring the kids along, grab a bite to eat and take a walk along the picturesque Auckland Harbour waterfront.

Outlet Shopping

Dress-smart is New Zealand’s largest outlet mall and brings all of your favourite brands (and plenty you’ve never heard of) under the one roof. Be prepared to spend big and save big here as the bargains are plentiful and hard to resist. Other outlet stores are dotted around the city suburbs but Dress-Smart, with everything under the same roof, is the easiest way to outlet shop. If Outlet shopping is your thing, staying the night at one of the nearby Auckland Airport hotels is probably the easiest and best value option.

Shopping Malls

The newest of the Auckland shopping malls, Sylvia Park is the largest and arguably the best mall in New Zealand. So large they publish their own fashion magazine, the mall is home to over 200 stores selling fashion, gifts, home wares, books and more. The Mall also has a movie theatre and a great range of dining options.

Other malls worthy of a visit are St Lukes, Glenfield Mall, Henderson Mall and Shore City.

Shopping Tours

If all of this information is too much for you to handle you can always let someone else do the hard work for you and jump onboard a shopping tour. There are a number of tour operators out there… some better than others. Do some Googling and visit their websites to see what they have on offer.

Remove Perfume From Fabrics And Clothing

Though they may not be effective for the more stubborn fragrances, it is good to start off with a set of simple solutions. A good number of perfumes break down easily when exposed to oxygen, light and moderate heat. Begin by tumble drying the piece of cloth in low heat. For greater effectiveness, consider tumbling the scented clothing with a fragrance-free dryer sheet.

For effective removal of more stubborn scents, look for a strong fabric freshener. This is especially a good solution for people who have a sensitivity to certain perfumes. For the best effect, hang the affected cloth and spray all around especially in the underarms and folds where fragrances are more likely to get trapped. If necessary, turn the piece of clothing inside out and spray on as well. Tumble dry the clothing for a few minutes for proper effect.

For the best results when dealing with a set of clothing affected by an undesirable scent, separate color fasts and whites. Take care to use a fragrance-free detergent in cleaning the items affected. If the previous methods have not worked, add a cup of vinegar in the laundry. Ensure you use plenty of clean water to when rinsing to get rid of the vinegar. For fragile clothing, use a gentle cycle for proper fabric care.

There are some unconventional scent removal products to help with your home made solutions such as those used by hunters. They are simple to use as they work like normal detergents. Hunters soak their clothes in the solutions before rinsing them off to ensure they are not easily smelled out by their quarry when hunting. You can buy a variety of the products from a sports supplies store near you.

Wear Bootcut Jeans

Boot-cut jeans suit most women’s body shapes as the width at the bottom of the jeans balances out the top half of the body giving an overall feminine silhouette.

Darker jeans are much more flattering than lighter denim as these help slim the leg. Lighter denim draws more attention to the bottom half of the body. A dark denim works almost in the same way as black (it’s slimming).

Boot-cut jeans look much better with a heel than with flats. Even Victoria Beckham favours this style of jean for her casual look. We see lots of women wearing this style of jean with flat shoes which doesn’t look as good as it does with a heel.

Why is this?

The flare at the bottom of the jeans needs to be lifted off the floor to make the leg look elongated. If a flat shoe is worn the leg looks shorter giving the impression that the person is shorter and not as streamlined.

When wearing boot-cut jeans with flat shoes more attention is drawn to the thighs and hips. When a woman wears any kind of heel the leg gets elongated making her look taller and slimmer.

To create a stylish look that makes the most of your shape always wear your boot-cut jeans with a heel.

Skinny jeans tend to work better with flats as they show more of the leg shape all the way down.

Monokini Swimsuits

These sleek little costumes are in fact a variation on the traditional one-piece cutout swimsuit. They take a design that (while still wearable) has probably lost a lot of its appeal for the more fashion conscious amongst us, and breathes new life into it by allowing it to be push up, have a Brazilian cut, come in a more recognizable triangle shape, or, if you like, you can have the adjustability that you get with some of the stunning halter designs that are available.

Obviously getting the right swimsuit is important, but the cut isn’t the only thing that you should be looking out for this summer. The cut will help to flatter those curves, but it’s the pattern that you choose that will help to bring attention to it in the first place.

Some patterns have been around for almost as long as the bikini itself, and are showing little to no signs of going out of fashion anytime in the near future. Oddly enough, solid colors can also be included in this category, too. We all know that a bikini that’s completely black is something every girl should have in their wardrobe, and that white can tend to be a bit more revealing, but both are still very fashionable, and should be worn as and when the mood takes you. Floral and more geometric patterns, however, will be totally down to the individual – some of us can wear them, others probably shouldn’t.

Shopping in Miami

Dolphin Mall

Dolphin Mall is the largest mall in Miami and boasts over 200 shops, cafes and restaurants. As well as the more typical outlets, such as Gap, Nike and Starbucks, you can also visit some major designer outlets, including Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger.

If you’re looking for something to eat, there’s the KOBE Japanese Steak and Seafood, Tango Grill Parrillada and a host of Latin influenced restaurants. There’s also the Cinebistro – a concept cinema offering top cuisine, fine wines & cocktails and a movie.

Aventura Mall

At the three-storey Aventura Mall, you will find a vast selection of shopping and dining experiences. There’s a Disney Store, Louis Vuitton, an ever-fragrant Lush soap outlet and an entire store devoted to Lego. The eating options are also plentiful, with a host of local and world cuisines all available in the mall.

The mall also holds regular events, such as the farmers market which offers shoppers some of the finest fresh produce in the area. There are often huge discount sales in the mall, giving consumers the chance to make some major savings on designer brands.

Bal Harbour Shops

On a sunny day in Miami, few things beat a spot of retail therapy down at Bal Harbour. This upscale complex is one of the few remaining family owned malls still operating in America, and is arguably the best looking retail area in the whole of Miami.

Since the designer label Gucci set up shop in Bal Harbour during the 1970’s, many designer brands have flocked to the area. Nowadays, Bal Harbour is populated almost entirely by world renowned fashion brands, with Versace, Giorgio Armani, Dolce and Gabbana and Fendi all currently residing in the complex.

Lincoln Road

For an entirely different shopping experience, try Lincoln Road Mall – perhaps the most alternative shopping centre in the region. The mall is ten blocks wide, and is largely closed to traffic. Lincoln Road offers some exquisite architecture, arty boutiques and private cafes. Some of the best Miami hotels are conveniently located in the area, making Lincoln Road an ideal destination for budding tourists.

Puma Golf Shirts

Ricky caused a huge buzz regarding Puma Golf Apparel. Questions abounded: How did they sign this guy? What’s up with that outfit? These were some of the rumblings from other golf manufacturers. They were scoffing and scared that they might lose some of their market share to a company that had been on the outs for the last few years. Puma Golf has now turned a new tide in golf shirts and accessories.

For years, the company had been known for their footwear. That is now changing. Puma now offers a full line of shirts, shorts, pants and accessories. Every shirt they produce has a matching pant, short, belt and shoes.

In addition, Puma golf shirts are made extremely well with 100% Polyester, moisture-wicking material so you don’t sweat. They also contain a UPF of 40 to protect you from the suns harsh rays. Most of the product line can be worn on and off the golf course. The pants and shorts have flat fronts and plaids that will make you look like your going to the beach. The colors that Puma offers are exciting, bold and tantalizing. Puma golf shirts are definitely for the young and the fit.

When Ricky hit the scene they did not have enough inventory to fill their orders. In fact, the golf clothing was hard to find in 2011. Now, that has all changed and its full steam ahead for Puma. With new inventory control in place, the company has finally achieved a balance on the amount of pieces they offer. For instance, one of Ricky’s hats that was very hard to get a few years back, can now be found just about anyplace. With Ricky Fowler as their spokesperson they are sure to grab a huge piece of the market of the younger golfers.

Puma’s biggest rivalry is Adidas. The latter company was at one time owned by two brothers and their ill fated feelings caused them to split into different directions. Now the two brothers fight for market share in the golf industry.

Wear Pea Coats

To get the most out of a pea coat, there are a few style tips it’s well worth taking on board. The first and most crucial step is to ensure that when you choose your coat, it fits you properly. A well-fitting pea coat should hug your body gently and reach down to your hips. Watch out for pea coats that are too short as they will make your torso look stocky and flare out above your hips in an unfortunate way. A pea coat that’s the right size for you is sure to make you look taller and slimmer, so get the size right straight out of the box.

While it’s a jacket that tends to be easy to wear, some clothing combinations will naturally work better than others. Stick to tight-legged trousers and jeans and avoid big flares, unless you really do want to look like and old school sailor. Pea coats look great with a suit, especially if you choose a different shade to that of your coat and a smart pair of wing tips are a great accessory. However, they also look great with some denim jeans, a pair of boots and a roll neck, cable knit jersey. Just make sure your jumper isn’t too thick and causing the material of the jacket to strain.

Remember that one of the best things about a pea coat is its clean line so don’t mess it up with dangling scarves or mufflers. Tuck the ends of your scarf into the collar of your coat and avoid wearing hoodies that will stick out the top or jumpers with overly long sleeves that will poke out the bottom. Keep your accessories looking nice and simple for the most effective silhouette and the best line.

A pea coat looks perfectly fine unbuttoned, but it’s when the buttons are fastened that it really shines. This is when the coat is able to give your figure some definition and that’s what makes it such a timeless classic. However, this will only work if you make sure to do up the right buttons. If you leave too many buttons at the top unfastened or fasten them all except for those at the bottom, the fabric won’t be able to keep its shape and you’ll end up with a slightly unflattering look. Always concentrate on the buttons at your midriff and make sure you do up the bottom buttons. Leaving a few undone at the top is fine, particularly if you’re wearing a scarf.

Journey of a Pearl

There are two types of genuine pearls-natural and cultured. Natural pearls occur in the wild when a speck of organic matter gets into an oyster. The oyster forms a small sac around the intruder and over time covers it in layers of nacre, a substance that builds up to form the pearl. Natural pearls are very rare, occurring in less than 1% of mollusks. Cultured pearls form in a very similar matter, but the initial irritant that begins the process is purposefully implanted.

Cultured akoya pearls come in a spectrum of hues. While some manufacturers achieve variety through a dyeing process, the required chemicals damage the pearls structural integrity, which diminishes luster. High quality come from a more organic process. Different oysters produce different colored pearls. Akoya pearls grow in shades of cream, pink, blue, and silver inside Japanese Akoya Oysters. Black-lipped Oysters produce charcoal, green, and silver Tahitian Black Pearls. South Sea Pearls in shades of gold and white and are harvested from Silver-lipped Oysters. The specific color depends on factors like the location of the irritant’s implantation, depth, temperature, and minerals present in the water.

They range in size from 7mm to 20 mm, depending on the type of pearl and the way it is cultured. For example, Akoya pearls are grown between 20C and 25C. At warmer temperatures, oysters quickly produce thick layers of nacre, which results in large but dull pearls. At cooler temperatures, oysters slowly produce thin layers of nacre, creating small pearls with great color and luster. To harvest large pearls with the best optical properties, experienced farmers grow them in warm water and switch to cooler water towards the end of the culturing process.

Oysters must be closely monitored to ensure a beautiful pearl. Fully grown pearls are checked for quality, cleaned, and sorted by size and hue. They are used in various types of jewelry, including earrings, bracelets, brooches, rings, and necklaces. Akoya strands are very popular, especially ones made from cream colored pearls. They come in a variety of lengths, from the classic princess necklace to the elegant opera necklace, which dips below the bust line. These are extremely versatile accessories that are great for everything from sprucing up jeans and a t-shirt to complementing a formal evening gown.

You should definitely bring someone. Many people bring their mum and a sister or a close friend. Whoever you choose, they should be people you trust to give an honest opinion but also not try to influence you to choose a dress they like rather than the one you like! Any more than two people and you’re going to end up with too many different viewpoints, which can get confusing for you. Besides, you want your wedding dress to be a surprise for as many people as possible on the big day!

Getting all made up to come wedding dress shopping

Okay, so wedding dress shopping feels more special than normal shopping, but there really is no need to get all dressed up for us! You should make sure that you are wearing a well-fitting bra if you are likely to need extra support under your wedding dress, but apart from that, casual is fine. In fact, we would prefer you didn’t wear any make up that could get smudged off on to the dresses.
